In this short article I will summarise recent research on cycling in urban Ireland and elsewhere in Europe. I will briefly comment on how cycling was discussed by Irish town planners in the past, and how it was discussed in Irish newspapers. In aiming to bridge a gap between the historical and the planning professions, I hope that some more knowledge of what happened in the past will allow planners to make more informed decisions about contemporary issues.en_US
